VETS Canada Partners with Community Builders Group to Offer Emergency Housing for Homeless Veterans in Vancouver

In response to the ongoing concern regarding homelessness amongst Vancouver Veterans, VETS Canada and Community Builders Group are partnering to provide emergency/transitional housing for retired military members of Vancouver.

This unique pilot project will provide one short-term stay unit (up to six months) for Veterans in crisis as they transition to long-term housing solutions. Following the Housing First model, the initiative involves a transformational approach that quickly accommodates individuals with housing and provides the connections to the community-based supports they require to obtain healthy living. A Veteran has already been placed in the unit and has begun his journey to wellness.

VETS Canada and Community Builders Group will coordinate to provide a holistic approach to care for each Veteran tenant.

“VETS Canada is excited to be working with Community Builders Group on this project – the demand for housing options for homeless Veterans in Vancouver is simply overwhelming,” says Jim Lowther, VETS Canada Co-Founder/CEO & President. “We know from research that Veterans are twice as likely to experience homelessness than civilians, which is why we need specialized initiatives to address homelessness/homelessness prevention for those who have served. At VETS Canada, our work is firmly planted in the belief that the men and women who protected our homes should never be without one, which is the foundation of this project.”

Community Builders Group is honored to be a part of the project. Executive Director Julie Roberts says, “Everyone deserves a home and a safe place to sleep. Community Builders is committed to providing housing solutions to the most vulnerable in Vancouver. The ability to provide that service in support of Veterans who served their country is an opportunity for us to give back to them.”
